Week 1 Kickoff: Meeting the “Alien”

Welcome to our very first SEAGAP Book Club discussion thread! 👋

In the introduction, Ethan Mollick makes a pretty bold claim: AI isn’t just a standard software update like a new Excel feature—it behaves more like an “alien mind” or an unpredictable coworker we have to learn to manage.

Hi all! Who has gotten their book? I’m team audio!

Learning more about AI each day. I am loving using Claude for HTML! Looking forward to seeing you all next week at the first virtual meet-up!

Good afternoon,

I am 🌲 Team Dead-Trees. Maybe it is my age, but I love the feel of a book in my hands and the ability to write notes in it and using my handy dandy yellow highlighter. See you next week!

@Jennifer, I also love the feel (and smell) of a good book! Hope you are enjoying.

🎧 Team Audio via Libby – yay for public libraries!

I like Mollick’s comparison of AI to an intern that you need to train and shouldn’t let completely loose in your workplace. Currently, I’m focusing on writing better prompts and inviting Copilot to savagely critique my ideas. In private.

So much love for our libraries! 🫶 Rachel, so glad you are joining us for book club. See you tomorrow in our first virtual meet-up!

I’m late to the discussion game, but I’ve been listening to the audiobook! I love to listen while I’m choring.
